FUNATSURU

SUMMARY
A project to renovate the entire building of a registered tangible cultural property along the Kamo River in Kyoto. Together with Funatsuru's owner, the five-storey building was moved up and down several times to examine how the cultural asset could be passed on to the future. In order to utilise the dynamic and prestigious raised ceiling of the main banquet hall, the spatial composition was significantly changed, including the removal of the existing partitions, so that the space can be used in unison with the foyer. In addition, the interior finishings of the entire building were updated, and the private dining rooms, drinks counters, foyer fixtures and furniture were newly installed.
